Good to know before travelling to South Korea

Prepare your trip with the key points on entry documents, transport, payments, mobile connectivity and local customs.

Entry documents and formalities

Travel with a valid passport and check whether your nationality requires a visa or a K-ETA electronic travel authorization. The electronic arrival declaration must, on the other hand, be submitted within 72 hours before entry whenever it applies to your situation, regardless of nationality. Keep a copy of your confirmation (printed or on your phone): it may be requested at border control or by your accommodation.

Accommodation address

Keep the full address of your first accommodation, its phone number and your booking confirmation. These details may be requested on the arrival form or at border control. If your trip includes several accommodations, prepare the details of each one: usually only the address of the first night is required, but the others may be requested during a check.

Transport and getting around

Subway and bus networks are extensive and reliable in major cities. A rechargeable transport card (such as T-money) makes journeys easier and avoids buying a ticket for every trip. To travel between major cities, high-speed trains (KTX) offer a fast and comfortable option. Keep the names of your destinations in Korean, or in romanized form, handy for taxi drivers.

Currency and payments

The local currency is the South Korean won (KRW). International bank cards are widely accepted, even for small amounts, but a small amount of cash remains useful in some shops, traditional markets and cash machines. Tipping is not customary and is generally not expected in restaurants or taxis.

Phone, internet and plugs

An eSIM, a local SIM card or a portable Wi-Fi router can be booked before departure and picked up directly at the airport on arrival. Outlets are generally type C or F, at 220 V: bring an adapter if your devices are not compatible.

Health, insurance and local customs

Travel insurance covering medical care and repatriation is strongly recommended. Pharmacies are numerous and easy to spot. Follow waste-sorting rules, keep quiet on public transport and follow the instructions posted in public places: these customs are part of everyday local life and are widely respected by visitors.

Time difference and the best time to travel

South Korea runs on UTC+9 all year round, with no seasonal clock change. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) generally offer the most pleasant conditions for visiting, with mild temperatures, while summer is hot and humid and winter can be harsh in some regions.

Before you leave: the quick checklist

Valid passport, checking your situation regarding the K-ETA, electronic arrival declaration submitted on time, address of your first accommodation, travel insurance and a way to connect your phone: gathering these elements before departure helps you start your trip to South Korea without any last-minute surprises.
